Manual Lymphatic Drainage/Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy (MDL/CDP)

MDL/CDP is a noninvasive therapy with long lasting results to treat dysfunctions of the immune system.

At the end of last century Dr. Winiwarter already described the basic steps for this therapy. Dr. Vodder and his wife, Estred, improved the technique in the 1930s. At that time, lymph nodes were frequently removed because they were considered to be malfunctioning when swollen. But removal further compromises the body's ability to fend off infections. Today we acknowledge the importance of the lymph system to remove, clean, and store waste products and toxins in the body.

MLD/CDP is a medically approved treatment and a special license is necessary.

The treatment itself consists of all or parts of the following techniques:
- Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle manual treatment technique that improves the activity of intact lymph vessels by mild mechanical stretches on the wall of lymph collectors. It consists of four basic strokes and any combination of same.
- Compression Therapy increases the tissue pressure and is applied between treatments in order to prevent reaccumulation of lymphatic fluid.
- Decongestive exercises are performed by the patient
- Skin Care, since infections are very common and serious complications of lymphedema.

Lymphedema, post-operative and post-traumatic swellings, various illnesses, sports injuries and stress-related disorders are responding very well to MLD/CDP.

Disclaimer: In case of Lymphedema, the first visit will include a consultation during which I will recommend the number and frequency of future sessions. Where appropriate, I will work in conjunction with your medical practitioner.
