Elisabeth Dicke, a physiotherapist in Germany, is credited with
"discovering" the Bindegewebsmassage technique. Her book, "Meine Bindegewebsmassage",
was published in 1956. (Bindegewebsmassage literally translates from the German
as Connective Tissue Massage.)
Bindegewebsmassage is a reflexive therapy
of the connective tissue, which means that the practitioner strokes the
subcutaneous fascia by pulling or dragging the tissues. The strokes in specific
patterns activate the nerve endings just below the skin, creating a cutaneo-visceral
reflex (skin to organ).
This technique is based on the theory that
any disruption or unbalance in any portion of the body affects the entire system,
specifically the autonomic, central nervous, and hormonal systems. And
any disruption in any of the body systems will affect the entire organism -
physiologically and psychologically.
Bindegewebsmassage is a very specific,
advanced technique, which I often use to assist in the rehabilitation of
pathologic conditions. I also apply parts
of it in stress management and for
injury treatments.
