Injuries can be classified into two basic categories - traumatic and overuse.
- Traumatic injuries are sudden happenings for which you
know something has gone wrong, and you feel the immediate effects
of the injury, perhaps pain, swelling, bruising, or an open wound.
The cause of the injury will vary according to circumstances and
conditions. Examples are a fall, sudden twist, or a sprain.
- Overuse injuries are subtler because they come on simply as a gradual
increasing pain, directly associated with a particular, usually repetitive,
activity (e.g., golfers or tennis elbow).
Massage's ability to aid in the recovery from soft tissue injuries is an
important use of massage. Many soft tissue injuries are not serious enough
to cause a visit to the doctor or hospital for treatment. Many soft
tissue injuries are often treated with first aid, but may cause some discomfort
and disability long after the initial injury. Professional massage can speed
and improve the rate of recovery and reduce discomfort associated with soft
tissue injuries.
To understand how massage helps healing in
cases of injury, it is important to understand the inflammatory process.
Inflammation begins because blood circulates to the injured area to bring
important chemicals essential for healing. After a period of time, the
initial inflammation stops. If applied at this point, massage will help
again increase circulation, and thus promote healing, as the increased
blood flow brings additional oxygen and nutrients to the injured area.
In this way, massage helps bridge the gap between common neglect of injury
and major expensive medical intervention.
For injury treatment, I use a combination of of
Cyriax Massage, Deep Tissue Massage (Trigger Point
, Bindegewebsmassage), and
Deep Swedish Massage. I will often also
use Hydrotherapy as well as MLD.
